Karen’s Mashups-Show 9-Conferences

In this show, I highlight podcasts from educational conferences. This show is a bit longer than what I usually do, but the content is so rich that I just couldn’t resist sharing slightly longer clips than usual!

There are great conferences going on every month of the year, and the information presented at them is a source of important professional development. No one has time to go to them all though.

Now, many conferences are distributing their best sessions as podcasts. When combined with blogs and wikis to facilitate discussion, this is almost as good as being there.

Included in this show are:

NCCE conference podcast- Excerpt of keynote by Governor Angus King

This the annual conference of the Northwest Council of Computer Education. This conference rotates between the cities of Spokane, WA, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR.

Web 2.0 Summit podcast – Except of a discussion with Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google

This is conference put on by the O’Reilly and CMP that features an exclusive group of industry leaders discussing important emerging technologies. Registration is by invitation only, and they have a ton of thought-provoking session recordings on their site.

NECC 2007 podcast – Excerpt of a session by Mitchel Resnick of the MIT Media Lab

NECC is national educational technology conference, held in Atlanta in 2007. This and many other educational conference podcasts are hosted by the Apple Learning Interchange as a part of Conference Connections. You can find them on iTunes by searching for Conference Connections.

FETC podcast – Excerpt from a session by Rob Mancabelli from the Hunterdon Central School District and Will Richardson

FETC is the Florida state technology conference, held in Orlando, FL. These podcasts are hosted on the Apple Learning Interchange’s Conference Connections site.

NYSCATE podcast – Excerpt from a session by Peter Reynolds of FableVision

NYSCATE is the New York state technology conference.

Another great conference podcast that we couldn’t include here, but is definitely worth checking out, is from the TED conference. This a gathering of the world’s greatest thinkers and doers. The archive of 18-minute talks on their web site is thought-provoking and has even inspired discussion groups and salons to explore the themes presented in small groups.

A W E S O M E!!!! As a high school history teacher in Mass., I realize that I need to get on this ASAP!

Please send me more information on workshops or conferences that I might be able to attend. In the meantime, I think I will be going to purchase the tools needed by the weekend.

Thanks for the message, and I’m glad you like my mashups! Podcasting is a great tool for education.

There are often workshops on this at ed tech conferences. I also do workshops at schools and districts.

The great thing about podcasting is that there isn’t much you need to buy. You can listen to podcasts on desktop computers, laptops, Palms, iPods, or other MP3 players. To make your own podcast, all you need is an inexpensive microphone headset (available for < $20) and editing software. Audacity is great and free.

See this podcasting page for more info.

    Thanks for listening and writing.
